Community College Placement

Starting October 15, 2018

Instead of college placement testing, community colleges will be using high school GPA OR ACT testing to determine whether students need to take additional developmental courses.

  • Students who enter a NC community college with an overall unweighted high school GPA of 2.8 or higher may select the appropriate college-level math and English courses for their chosen program without a corequisite.

  • Students who enter a NC community college with an overall unweighted high school GPA of 2.2-2.799 will be enrolled in co-requisite college-level math and English courses appropriate for their program of study.

  • Students with an overall unweighted high school GPA of less than 2.2 will be enrolled in a supportive transitional program offered through Basic Skills or Curriculum (college’s choice) as part of their enrollment in a college program

ACT Scores- Students may place into a gateway math or English course through ACT scores that meet national benchmarks. Additionally, the Rise model allows for students to place into gateway math and English courses with a supportive co-requisite if they fall within a prescribed range off the benchmark.

  • ACT math score of 22+ gateway math without a co-requisite

  • ACT math score of 20-21 gateway math with a co-requisite

  • ACT English score of 18+ gateway English without a co-requisite

  • ACT English score of 16-17 gateway English with a co-requisite

  • ACT Reading score of 22+ gateway English without a co-requisite

  • ACT Reading score of 20-21 gateway English with a co-requisite

***Some programs are application based and have their own requirements.
