Course Syllabus

Course Title:  Core and Sustainable Construction

Course Description:  This course covers the introduction to different trades in the field of construction.  It is the first in a three (3) course program in either Carpentry or Electrical Trades.  Skills in leadership, communication, safety, construction mathematics, planning, use and care of hand and power tools, blueprint reading, material handling, your role in the “Green Environment” and problem solving are reinforced in this course.  Work-based strategies appropriate for this course are cooperative education and apprenticeship. Hands on experience and Skills USA leadership activities provide many opportunities to enhance classroom instruction and career development. This course is accredited through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).  Students completing this course will receive a certificate indicating what training the student has received for future employment.

Course Objectives:  In this class the student will master the following:  Demonstrate communication, problem solving, and team building skills;  Identify terms, skills requirements and employment opportunities; Define, discuss , interpret, and use basic safety associated in a school shop and on a job site;  Demonstrate the various units of measurement and layout tools used in the Construction Trade; Demonstrate the safe and proper use of stationary and hand held power equipment;  Demonstrate basic blueprint reading; Develop basic material handling skills; Develop employability and communication skills, and Understand their Role in the Green Environment.

Course goals:  To instill in the students leadership, working as a team, goal setting, and self pride and accomplishment, and to develop employability skills in the construction trade.



Class rules and procedures:

  • Follow all school rules as noted in the school handbook.
  • Follow all shop safety rules. (Provided Separately)
  • Treat others with respect.
  • Come to class on time, with all materials, and ready to learn.
  • Enter the class quietly and in a timely manner.

Consequences:  Inappropriate classroom behavior and/or failure to comply with classroom and shop or safety procedures including, theft, neglect, destruction of school property or other students’ projects will result in one or more of the following:

  • Verbal or written reprimand.
  • Timeout
  • Parent Consultation.
  • Afternoon detention.
  • Administrative referral.

Course instructional methods:  The teacher will be using oral instruction from the text book and other teaching materials.  The teacher will also be guiding hands on (shop) instruction.

Grading Policy:  Grades for each nine week grading period will be based on tests, quizzes, homework assignments, and class and shop participation.  Your nine week grade will be calculated as follows:

Tests:  60%

Performance Assessments/Class Participation: 40%

Note:  The end of course exam will count as 20% of the final grade. If the student passes all of the assigned modules and is eligible for NCCER Certification he/she will not be required to take the final exam and will be given an exam grade of 100.  If the student is not certified thru NCCER they will be required to take the final exam.

Grading scale:  Letter grades are assigned on the usual scale:                                A (90 -100), B (80 – 89), C (70-79), D (60-69) F (below 60).

Testing:  Students may take the end of module test 3 times to achieve a grade of 70 to pass the written examination or to improve their grade.  The “hands on” performance evaluation requires a score of 100 and can be taken as many times as needed to achieve the perfect score.

Course materials and supplies:

  • Text:  Core Curriculum, Introductory Craft Skills, 4th Edition NCCER (provided).
  • Well organized notebook, paper and pencil.  It is suggested that students use a 3-ring binder with dividers so that notes and materials can be organized.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (provided).
  • Hand & Power Tools (provided).
  • “Construction Master Calculator” (provided).

Absences and late assignments:  Due to the nature and pace of instruction of this class, it is strongly recommended that the students be in class on time and ready to learn.  It is the students responsibility to make up all work missed due to being absent. The student will have 5 days upon returning to school to make up the work missed.  All after school time must be coordinated with the teacher.

Progress reports:  Progress reports will be sent home at the time designated by the school administration.  If the parent would like to receive progress reports in addition to those, please feel free to contact me.
