Mr. Poore was recently accepted into a Science Coaches program that will allow him to continue working with Nick Martinez, a researcher in the UNC Biochemistry and Biophysics department who visited with CDHS Biology students during last year’s DNA Day. The purpose of the Science Coaches program is to pair a member of the ACS (American Chemical Society) with a member of the AACT (American Association of Chemistry Teachers), thus benefiting students by allowing them to take part in demonstrations or laboratory experiments with a science professional.
According to Mr. Poore, Mr. Martinez “was very impressed with our school and fell in love with our students during his last visit, and as a former teacher was excited for an opportunity to be able to come back.” Mr. Poore and Mr. Martinez were officially accepted into the program on September 20. This program also rewards our school with a gift certificate for $550 through Flinn Scientific to purchase equipment and supplies.

In addition to taking advantage of this opportunity with ACS, Mr. Poore has also registered his AP Chemistry class to participate in a live webinar on September 27 which will feature representatives from UCLA, the University of Strasbourg, and Chemistry & Engineering News magazine discussing the nominees for the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and how their research connects to the big ideas of chemistry.

Thank you, Mr. Poore, for collaborating with outside agencies to provide these excellent learning opportunities for our students!
